En:HOW TO GET INTO THE CLOSE PROTECTION (CP) SECURITY SECTOR
If you are looking for a career in Close Protection security then there are many differences between working in the UK, to working abroad or in hostile environments.
To work in Europe or the UK as a Close Protection Security Officer, you must have certain licenses and certifications given by authorised training providers. In some cases, you can get credit for training and skills you have learned as a policeman or member of the military. In fact, many of the close protection operatives already on the job are ex-military and ex-police.
CP COURSE MODULES
While the actual licensing is acquired only from these awarding bodies, the coursework can be completed with multiple authorised training providers. Many of the courses will have hands-on experience involved and are often held as consecutive residential courses, typically a 4 week course where food and accommodation is provided.
FIRST PERSON ON SCENE
Your First Person On Scene, or FPOS certification is good for 3 years, after which you’ll take a refresher course. This training prepares you for medical treatment and triage if you are the first person to arrive on the scene of an accident or attack. As a Close Protection Officer, you will have the task of protecting the health of your client should an assailant get through your perimeter, or in the case of explosion, fire, or some other catastrophic event.
Your FPOS certification will include the priorities in establishing scene safety. You’ll also learn the basics in reducing the risk of infection, both at the wound site and as influenced by surrounding environment.
Patient assessment will be a significant part of your training, helping you to provide triage on site. Your skills must also include basic life support and the ability to administer automated defibrillation, initial emergency patient care, and your role as part of a medical response team.
CLOSE COMBAT AND UNARMED COMBAT COURSES
Close combat courses are required to receive your CPO license. You may have to decide in a matter of only seconds whether or not your life or the life of your client is endangered, and act accordingly. You will also have to know both lethal and nonlethal skills for close combat, and be able to judge whether or not lethal action is necessary in a situation. Dangerous circumstances can escalate suddenly if you use unnecessary force.
When you are involved in close combat, you may be up against more than one opponent. You and/or the assailants may or may not be armed, and your skills will range from enforcing compliance to use of deadly force. You will learn to fight, unarmed, against an assailant who is armed with either a rifle, knife, bayonet, baton, or weapons of opportunity.
Is the ability to make a quick decision and act on it speedily, gaining the advantage. You must also be able to adapt to changing circumstances, and take advantage of success.
ADVANCED DRIVER TRAINING
In addition to your CPO License you can also complete an advanced driver training course to strengthen your skill-set. There are many facets of this training, including: awareness, risk management skills, IED search, personal safety, vehicular security, route planning, anti-hijack training, skid training, and TAC driving.
After advanced driver training, you should be well aware of the need to be alert to potential threats, changes in traffic patterns, and driving under unusual conditions, such as under hostile fire, in motorcades, convoys, or on damaged roads. You will also become efficient in high speed driving and in the dynamics of the vehicle you are driving, so that you are aware of the control necessary to make the car do what you want. You will learn to asses and act quickly when there are accidents or road emergencies.As a certified Advanced Driver, you will also be able to establish vehicle security, and detect surveillance equipment and efforts on the part of your adversaries. Since kidnapping is always a threat, you’ll learn case studies on the subject and learn kidnapping strategies and how to defend against them.
You’ll learn the pros and cons of various vehicles for safe transportation of crucial people, and the use of armoured vehicles. You should be able to assess the quality of an armoured vehicle, and be able to plan according to its strengths and weaknesses.
You’ll learn how to drive in pursuit situations, whether you are being pursued or are the pursuer, yourself. You will become proficient in evasive driving techniques and carjacking countermeasures, as well. And, of course, you will become familiar with the legal considerations surrounding all of these skills. You’ll learn vehicle anti-ambush drills and vehicle-borne extraction.
WORKING IN HOSTILE ENVIRONMENT
When undergoing close protection training you will be familiarised with tactics used in a hostile environment, and you can further this training if this is an area you wish to specialise in. During a Working In Hostile Environment course you will learn your responsibilities as a CPO, and your role in dealing with locals and staff members in hostile environments. Threat and risk assessment is important to avoid unwarranted actions on your part, while surveillance awareness and reconnaissance will provide you with invaluable information about intentions and threats in the environment in which you and your client are operating.
As with any other interaction, operational planning is crucial to reduce contact with the hostiles and to protect your client, and operating within the legal limits may play into your decisions. You’ll learn more about route selection, and close protection foot techniques and vehicle techniques.
You’ll also learn to deal with incidents and dilemmas that occur both from intent and spontaneity. Venue security will be an issue, as each venue will present different opportunities for threats.
The ability to communicate effectively, and to resolve conflicts in a non-violent manner are also important, and part of this training.
WEAPONS TRAINING COURSE
In a weapons training course, you will learn to effectively operate small arms and rifles. You’ll become familiar with the safety requirements and operations of several different weapons, and learn tactical movement necessary to improve shot accuracy.You’ll learn the rates of fire for each weapon, and practice distance shooting and individual bodyguard shoots.
You’ll also learn holstered and unholstered pistol shots, dual weapon shoots, VIP shoots, and team extraction shoots.
Along with this there are many advanced firearms courses available for those seeking work in specialised areas or in a hostile environment.
