En: The history of VIP protection
The purpose of executive or VIP(Very important person) protection – also known by military euphemism ..close protection – is relatively simple: to protect someone ,typicaly a member of a political or business elite but also a celebrity ,from danger,The more important the person, the more complicated the task becomes. A head of government or state may be an obvious target for assassination but also has official duties and political responsibilities that frequently require him to be out in public. In addition to providing a highly visiblw human shield ,executive protection includes safety transporting ,securing and testing the physical environment ,and guarding immediate relatives.
Leader throughout history have had groups of military units to protect them in some form or another, Alexander the Great, whose father had been assassinated ,had both bodyguards in the more traditional sense and also his ,,companions’’who protect him on his campaign. At the battle of Ganicus (344 b.c) the Persians intentionally set out to kill him.
Probably the most famous of all bodyguard units was the Roman Imperial Praetorian Guard. These guard’s establish by Augustus , who was mindful of what happened to his uncle ,were drown from elite soldiers who protect Roman generals in the field. They were the only armed force of any size in Roman Empire ,which gave them the power to make and break emperors ,even thought they ,,were not directly responsible for protecting the emperor himself’’.
Sejanus ,a prefect of the Guard ,acquired extensive power during Tiberius’s reign;he effectively ruled for the largely absent emperor ,although he was later removed form office and executed . In 41 a.d ,officers of the Guard ,tired of Caligula’s excesses ,killed him and his family and then ,,nominated’’ Claudius as his successor .in a later case ,the Guard actually held an auction for the throne in their barracks; several emperors were murdered by either the regular army or by the Guard. These ,and instance of regular army backing claimants to the throne, led to the word : ,,praetorianism’’ , although it now tends to refer to intervention of the regular amred forces in politics.
As woulod be expected ,most of people who carried out VIP protection throughout history have come from either the military or police. Many famous military units actually started out as or at some time served as bodyguard of the ruler but frequently played important parts in battle as well.
At Waterloo ,for example, Napoleon threw his Old Guard into battle in a desperate bid to break the British lines,A more recent and more infamous example was the First Panzer Division of the Waffen SS(Armed SS) in Nazy Germany. The Liebstandarte Adolf Hitler (bodyguard of Adolf Hitler) regiment was created as a personal bodyguard unit for the fuhrer. It served in the campaign against
Poland and was later expanded and upgraded to a panzer (tank) division. It was one of the elite units of the Waffen SS ,witch served as a counterweight to the regular German Army and , as the war progressed, grew in size and importance .Waffen SS units spearheaded almost all of the later Geman offensives in the war , and served as sort of defensive,,fire brigade’’ against Allied attack.
An even more recent example is the Iraqi Republican Guard. It was originally formed as a security force for Saddam Hussein and was largely modeled after the Waffen SS. Initially ,it was a small force ,but as the Iran-Iraq war of the 1980’s dragged on ,it too was thrown into battle, increased in size ,and equipped to become the elite fighting force in Iraq. Part of the Republican Guards, the Second Battalion of the Special Republican Guards continues to protect Hussein.it too is outside the control of the regular army.
These examples are not unique we can see even the Unit 8431 (Chinese Special forces) , Special Branch of Scotland Yard(protecting the British Royal Falimy and other VIP’s) , the SAS (Special Air Service) and the US Green Berets are taught close protection skills and frequently pass these skills on to other countries ,,bodyguard units .In many countries elite units of the military serve as bodyguard, but in the new decade more and more the private area adopt the same ideology and training to establish the same level of close protection.
